Why managing stress matters more than you think when it comes to your symptoms

In my article last month, I talked about my search for root causes of symptoms, in my work as a Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach. This work can get quite complex, in assessing what is driving the systems of the body to be out of balance. However, looking at what is actually keeping a health situation going, or making it worse, can be much more simple. Last time, I talked about ‘empty food’ being an ultimate root cause.


This month, I’d like to share with you what I see as another ‘ultimate’ root cause. It’s something I talk with clients and patients about on a daily basis. And if you are trying to manage a health condition or just keep yourself as well as you can be,


It. Really. Matters. 


What I am referring to is stress!


Stress comes in different forms but emotional stress is often the stuff we are aware of. If we are going through a big life event (like a bereavement, an illness or break-up), we might be acutely aware that this in impacting how we feel, on a daily, hourly or minute-by-minute basis.


But stress can be more subtle and also cumulative (‘the straw that broke the camel’s back’).

But what we might not be aware of is why it is so important to manage stress. Stress is often not something we can control or sometimes even reduce, but it has a significant physical impact on the body.


Thankfully there is lots we can do to support the body to become more resilient to reduce the impact of stress (both day-to-day and in more acute situations) on our health. We can also support recovery in-depth, when coming out of a particularly stressful period.


This is often when clients come to see me. I support people who are having problems with their energy, sleep, mood and gut health. These are often heavily influenced by stress and can be early warning signs that all is not well.
