Art at The Tree Room

In this painting, you can see the main figure, Boudica, an important historical figure who led a major revolt against Roman rule in AD 60-61, targeting Colchester as the first Roman capital.

 

I decided to paint the Anglo-Saxon, Holy Trinity Church, which was built with the remains of Roman bricks, making it the oldest standing building in Colchester. It was later expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries, with more renovations occurring in the 19th century.

 

I thought that adding the clock would be a nice touch, as it represents the repair shop Timperleys, which has been making clocks since the 1950s.

 

The music notes are related to John Wilbye (1574-1638), a madrigal music composer who is buried in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church.

 

I painted sisters Jane and Ann Taylor, who are famous for creating the "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" nursery rhyme. You can see them appearing out of the windows in the painting.

I also painted Humpty Dumpty to portray the famous storybook character, but also to show the theory that Humpty Dumpty was a large cannon in the 1648 English Civil War, which fell from the town's wall, symbolising the fall of Colchester to parliamentary forces.

 

I am very grateful and pleased that I was able to participate in this project and hope that this mural is loved and enjoyed by everyone who comes across it.
